Designed by the famous late Canadian architect Bing Thom, The Hong Kong Jockey Club University of Chicago Academic Complex | The University of Chicago Francis and Rose Yuen Campus is the University of Chicago’s premier location in Asia.

The project comprises the preservation of the ex-Victoria Road Detention Centre and the Jubilee Battery, two Grade 3 local heritage buildings, and the construction of a 3-storey modern teaching centre on a historically important site at Mount Davis. Works include formation, foundation, demolition of existing structures, landscaping, building services, heritage and concrete repair works.

The new building was tactfully constructed on the slope with mini-piles, while extra care was taken to protect the original buildings due to the close clearance between the new and the old buildings. Specialist craftsmen were recruited for the conservation works, and unique features including the GMS windows, timber staircase and coved ceiling were kept using special materials sourced directly from the UK.
